NIPO Fieldwork System Fieldwork Logging Times

The NIPO Fieldwork System stores various interviewing related times in its system files and tables. It keeps information in the interviewer log, the contact log and the U-file. Below is a schematic overview of the logging times kept in these files and tables, per action in the system. Note the following important differences between these logs:

  • The interviewer log stores accumulated times of a single interviewer session on a single survey. This spans one or more sample records as well as break times and time waiting for the system.
  • The contact log stores contact attempts. For a single sample record there may be zero or more contact attempts in the log. Contacts may be non-responses, partial interviews or full interviews.
  • The U-file contains the interview length of the stored interview, which may or may not be a successful interview. Whether or not an interview was stored depends on configuration of the used response code.

Time frame is 0 or negligible

Notes:

  1. The log time segments are not to (approximate) scale: segments times can range from less than a second to several minutes, and are dependent on sample size, dialer mode (if any) and survey length.
  2. The Pause time in the interviewer log is only logged if the interviewer handled at least one sample record. If the interviewer logs in to a survey, directly enters pause mode and then logs off or switches to a different survey, no record is stored for the (first) survey in the interviewer log.
  3. If an interview is restarted, the contact time and introduction time in the contact log are reset. The interviewer log contact time however is not deducted.
  4. *INFO page 1 is shown at the start of each contact; *INFO page 3 is only shown once for the first contact in the current session of the interviewer on this survey.
  5. The telephone time in the contact log is not included in this overview as it is either timed (toggled) by the interviewer using F10 or reported by the dialer (if any) based on the actual phone contact time with a respondent.
