Nfield Code Version 1.1
Appending New Open-Ended Answers
As you progress through coding your project, updated files with new open-ended answers may arrive from the fieldwork department. These can be appended at any time during the coding process.
To append new open-ended answers
- Click on the toolbar or select File > Append Answers... from the menu.
- Your project needs to be saved before the import is attempted. If any changes were made since the last save, you will first be prompted to save the project.
- Select the Nfield Code file to append to the project. If there are any new answers since you last imported open-ended answers, you should notice a change in the number of open-ended answers counts in any of the overview screens.
Note that if you do not save your project before exiting Nfield Code, the data from the append action is also discarded.
Nfield Code does not merely append the open-ended answers from the append data. New questions and their Code Frames are also added to the project file. In addition, if there are differences between questions and Code Frames in the import data and in the Code Frame, the data in the project file may be changed in a number of ways.
Be aware of the following import rules:
- If open-ended answers in the import data already exist in the project file, you are given the chance to select to re-import the existing open-ended answers. Be careful - this clears all codings for those open-ended answers.
- If the append data contains open-ended answers that already exist in the code project, you will be given the choice to overwrite and subsequently uncode those open-ended answers. If those answers are locked for teaming, you are given the option to unlock the open-ended answers.
- If a Code Frame in the append data contains codes that do not yet exist in the Code Frame in the project, the new codes are added to the Code Frame in the project. If two codes with the same label text but with different code numbers exist, the code in the project file is merged with the code in the append data. The code number of the append data is used as the new code number. If the code number of the append data is already in use for a code with a different label in the project file, the project file's code number is changed to an available number.
- Question details such as the question text, the question type and the question coding type are overwritten with the details specified in the append data. If as a result of this a multiple-coded question changes into a single-coded question, open-ended answers are recoded to only the first code of the codings.
- If the import data contains a Max Codes Allowed setting for a question, it overwrites the Max Codes Allowed value for the question in the Code Frame only if the imported value is higher than the current value.
- If the default language specified in the append data differs from the default language of the project, the append action is canceled.
- If a Code Frame in your project is locked for teaming, no changes can be made. You are given the option to continue without changing the Code Frame or to cancel the entire append action.
