Working with Translations

For multi-language projects, open-ended answers may come in various languages. Naturally, a coder cannot be assumed to master all the languages in which the project has run. Nfield Code solves this by providing tools for translators to translate questions descriptions, Code Frames, autocoding search keys and open-ended answers. Coders may view the questions texts, Code Frames and open-ended answers in the translation of their choice, provided that a translation is supplied.

By default, an import of NIPO Fieldwork System data contains question texts and Code Frames in the main language of the questionnaire. Translations in the script are not automatically added as translations in Nfield Code. It is therefore required to manually add these to the Nfield Code project file. See this section for details.

As a result, all question texts and Code Frames are shown in the main language of the questionnaire, while open-ended answers may be listed in any language in which the respondent answered the question.

During an export from the NIPO ODIN Developer the language of the main questionnaire is set. Nfield Code uses this language as the default working language. In Nfield Code, you can set translation languages for the questions and Code Frames as well as the open-ended answers.

Code Frames are exported in the main language of the questionnaire. As the default working language, Nfield Code uses the language set using the NIPO ODIN Developer export. Note that currently the language sections used in the questionnaire script are ignored. Translations of questions and Code Frames for different languages in the questionnaire need to be manually added.

Whether you are a coder or a translator, you start your job by first setting the correct working language.

Translation of a multi-language code project is only intended to support the coding process. It is by no means a requirement. A code project may as well simply be coded by people who master various languages, or by various native speakers. For autocoding purposes however, you may opt to supply extra search keys for autocoding.
